Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a background check to volunteer?

keyboard_arrow_down

The answer is no! We are not a registered charity at this point, so background checks are not necessary. You’re just a person doing something good for a neighbour in need! Read more about how your donation is protected in the “Food Donations Act” FAQ below.

I know a family who could benefit. How do I refer them?

keyboard_arrow_down

We prefer to operate through organizations. However, if you know of a family in need, we certainly do not want to leave them out. Let us know on our Refer a Family page. We will have the volunteer drop their gift off at a neutral location (such as a church, organization, etc) and allow the family to pick up from there.

Can I get a charitable donation receipt?

keyboard_arrow_down

Unfortunately, no. At the moment, we are not a registered charity. But we still appreciate your gifts of time, cake or money. We cannot run without your generosity.

I don't have much baking experience, can I still volunteer?

keyboard_arrow_down

You bet! We want to emphasize that we are looking for bakers of all skill and experience levels. Whether this is your first cake, or your thousandth, there is a family in your community who will appreciate the time, support and love you put into your donation. Still not comfortable with baking? Let us know on our Volunteer page, and we will keep you in mind for future opportunities such as fundraisers, volunteer coordinating, delivering cakes, etc.

Are you a registered charity?

keyboard_arrow_down

Not at the moment. We are going to see where this journey takes us and may decide to register at a later date.

Food donations Act

keyboard_arrow_down

Our food donations are covered under the Food Donation Act. Because there is no money being exchanged, your donation is seen as no different than bringing a plate of cookies to your neighbour. Interested in reading more about this? Here’s a link to a great resource.

How do you protect the privacy of families involved?

keyboard_arrow_down

Our recipient families can always remain anonymous. We ask only for the child’s first name or initial. This is done to protect the family and child’s safety, privacy and dignity. If the family prefers to remain anonymous, we protect them by having the volunteer drop off their cake to a neutral location such as the organization who referred them, or a church, etc.

Financial donations

We are incredibly grateful for the donations we receive. These go towards expenses such as our website, the cost of cake boxes, etc. We run the occasional fundraiser, so watch our facebook (Cakes For Kids Saskatoon) or instagram (@cakesforkidsyxe) for updates!
